Two men are playing bowls, glimpses of them occasionally being seen at the corner of the bowling green above the terrace. In the background three of the women gossips are standing chatting, one of them a broad-beamed milkmaid with old fashioned wooden yoke and milk pails. The curtain rises to Music, but not upon the conventional 'Opening Chorus' - a Mulready picture is the first impression of the scene. In the backgound (across the bridge) is the Quaker meeting House. Stage Right - In the foregound (directly opposite the 'Chequers') is a prim garden leading to an equally prim Georgian house, the home of Nathaniel and Rachel Pym (brother and sister, heads of the Quaker Community). It has the air frequented by the well-to-do elements of society. Through the window of the Inn tables can be seen daintily laid out. At the top end of the terrace is the entrance to the bowling green. Stage Left - In the foreground above a stone terrace is a charming old Elizabethan Inn, the 'Chequers'. The main road to the village comes down from a hill at the back, crossing a bridge centre, and then going off left.
